The Underdog....

Whom would you support in an evenly contested battle between David and Goliath? Doesn't it sound more romantic and adventurous to root for the victory of the underdog. In hopelessly lopsided contests where a person/team puts in no effort for a fight, the more efficient and superior opponent does have to be the winner, so as to ensure, "Rewards for hard work".

More often than not, one tends to be heavily partisan in support towards one's favorite sportsperson/team/country. But isn't it more interesting when Nigeria beats Brazil in Football, or when Bangladesh beats Australia in Cricket? In the true spirit of the game or enterprise, there is no single winner or loser for the journey is more important than the destination. Thus, hopefully, the day of the underdog isn't far enough.

Last week saw me rooting for the trailing-behind team (the underdog) in an evenly contested match between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. The Colts finally won, courtesy a last minute touchdown, after coming from behind 3-21, to lead 32-13, and then to be down 31-34 (well, the numbers are important, but then, more important than that is the trend of the game). I was wavering between both the teams, but then, my heart did finally go out for the "losers". Such is the glory and beauty of sport.

At a more personal level, wouldn't it better to seek, suffer and then soar, instead of, inescapably falling down from a great height due to conceit, ignorance and arrogance. Aren't we all underdogs in all that we do? Don't we all have so much to strive for, with perfection being a mere illusion. If so, then, why is it that the ego always remains conceited?

Nice short post! In some ways, this is close to my fav topic - motivation. Yeah, we all need to be underdogs mentally as u have rightly put. However, we need to be underdogs to our ambitions, goals, etc and other internal factors as opposed to setting a relative benchmark - i.e. vs friend, colleague, x, y, z...

These ambitions could be perfection for one, impact or a simple tangible measure for someone else. Blog more about this na, I will think of something in parallel as well.

Shiv: thanks for your comments. Welcome!

Pammie: Here, you go with tangible measures and outcomes. Jokes apart, interesting comment. Your last line gives me a new line of thought. :)

Hello. Came here via your comment in 'A Walk in the Clouds'. Interesting place you have here...

What about the categories did you not get? You've done up your own blog neatly, with categories in the sidebar (they're called 'labels' here, but they serve the same purpose).

'A Walk in the clouds' runs on WordPress.

First of all, I want you to sit with me one day and arrange my blog also as nicely as you have done yours.... since I just starting, so it should not be that difficult to arrange it well right from the beginning:-))

Regarding this one - nice, short, cute and yet expresses a much deeper concept: "hopefully, the day of the underdog isn't far enough". While I will not agree with all the points that you have made (like won't one enjoy Bangaladesh beating Australia more than the other way round), it indeed is important that the underdogs in all fields and arenas get equal opportunity and support to come out of the "underdog" label.

Hello Mr.Insecticide007: Welcome to my blog. Thanks for your comments. The latest revamp of the blog required quite a bit of an effort.. considering my html skills... the template is from blogger template. whatever little help that i can be of, i will be so.

all this talk of equal opportunity and diversity sounds like heavy political lingo. I had written it more from the point of view of a person, and was inspired by that match.

well just skimming over some entries, one word that kept falshing through my hazy mind was :idealistic. your posts seem tuned to a higher sphere of thought where perfection is an achievable target...but reality cruelly dictates that human nature is hopelessly mundane, maudlin and immature.
and the day of the underdog has never been far and will never be...after all werent goliaths once davids themselves?

so coming back, your blog makes me look up and say 'good organization seems to be a myth.for me.' very nice place you have here...its so...(cliched as that sounds)...PERFECT... logical analysis and intense scrutiny. keep up the good work!

p.s why dont you add a shoutbox?

Lakshmi N: hmmm.. perfection as an achievable target. well, I truly don't know. It is more like a myth, but then, things are possible, if we do them in the right earnest.

Btw, I do have a label titled "perfection as a myth".

Thanks for your flattering comment about the blog.

Well, about a shoutbox, let me say, that it never occurred to me. Then, there is my having to hack some html code from somewhere. :)
